Education Partnership North East (EPNE) is supporting employers across the region to build future talent pipelines through high-quality apprenticeship programmes in areas including cyber security, data analytics, software development, networking and IT infrastructure. As demand for digital and technology skills continues to grow, apprenticeships are helping businesses develop the talent they need while creating new career opportunities for individuals looking to enter the sector.
One learner taking her first steps into a career in data analytics is Tanyapa, who recently started a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship with Transmission Dynamics, a North East engineering and technology company that develops innovative solutions for sectors including automotive, aerospace and off-highway. Before beginning her apprenticeship, Tanyapa worked in the pharmaceutical sector and had a background in chemistry. Looking for a new challenge and inspired by a growing interest in data and artificial intelligence (AI), she decided to take a different career path.
“I wanted to try something different and move into another industry. I’ve really enjoyed working with data and AI since I started three months ago.”
The Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship equips learners with the skills to collect, analyse and interpret data to support business decision-making. The programme covers areas such as coding, databases, data visualisation and statistical analysis, while allowing apprentices to apply their learning in a real working environment. Reflecting on her decision to move into technology, Tanyapa said:
“I wanted a challenge, and I knew that my background in chemistry had given me good analytical skills. I thought this would be a career I would enjoy because I like reviewing data and being able to use it to have an impact.”
Since joining Transmission Dynamics, Tanyapa has worked on real business projects, including tasks involving monitoring devices and reviewing video feedback for clients. She credits the hands-on nature of the apprenticeship and the support of her colleagues for helping her develop new skills and confidence.
“I’ve really enjoyed the challenge and learning lots of new things. I love learning on the job rather than just in a classroom. I enjoy playing around with code, seeing what works and then figuring things out when something doesn’t.”
Just three months into the programme, Tanyapa is already proud of how far she has come.
“I came into the apprenticeship with relatively little knowledge of coding, and now, just three months in, I’m able to code. I’m really proud of how much I’ve learned in such a short space of time. I’ve had lots of support from my mentor and the wider team, which has really helped me develop my skills and confidence.”
Tanyapa hopes her experience will encourage more women to explore careers in technology and not be afraid to try something new.
“I think it’s important to push yourself out of your comfort zone and take the jump. There is support out there if you’re driven and willing to learn. As an apprentice, the team here have given me the space to grow and learn at my own pace, while still giving me the support I need. I’ve felt really comfortable since I started.”
Tanyapa’s experience demonstrates how apprenticeships can create opportunities for individuals to develop in-demand digital skills while supporting employers to build their future workforce. Jamie Gilbey, Technical Trainer & Assessor at EPNE, said:
“Tanya’s approach to her apprenticeship has been first class. She brings a fantastic attitude to every session and is consistently engaged, punctual and committed to developing her skills. Throughout the programme, she has built strong capabilities across data analysis, from understanding customer requirements and preparing data through to statistical, descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analysis. She has also developed her understanding of her organisation’s data architecture and expanded her technical skills in areas such as SQL and Python. It’s a genuine pleasure to work with Tanya and to see her confidence and capabilities continue to grow.”
Looking ahead, Tanyapa plans to continue developing her knowledge of coding and AI as the technology continues to evolve.
