What’s it all about?

This qualification is designed to help for those aged 19 and over prepare to enter, or progress within, employment where you work or interact with people with learning disabilities in a variety of roles.

This qualification will be ideal for you if you’re working within health or social care but may also be useful if you’re working in education or a housing support role.

You can also take this qualification to support your progress into further learning within the Health and Social Care sector.

Students wishing to undertake the certificate should be aged 18 or over. You will need to have at least a Level 1 qualification in literacy as you will be expected to write answers for assessment purposes.

Although there are no specific recommended prior learning requirements, learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a Level 1 qualification in a health and social care related area.

You will be added to our Equal platform, where you will be able to access all the learning resources and assessments to complete. You will be allocated your own personal tutor who you can contact throughout your studies. You will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and demonstrate your knowledge. Your personal tutor will then assess your work and provide you with constructive feedback for each unit.
This course is available paper-based too on request.

You should be able to work at a Level 1 in Functional Skills.

This is a 16-week course that requires your own time management for study. You will be given submission dates to keep you focused on the 16-week timeframe

This qualification is suited to anyone currently working with, or looking to work with,individuals who have any form of learning disability, in order to enhance their knowledge and understanding of personalised care in this context.

This course is split into six manageable units:

- Unit 1: Understand the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities
- Unit 2: Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
- Unit 3: Introduction to personalisation in social care
- Unit 4: Principles of positive risk taking for individuals with disabilities
- Unit 5: Introductory awareness of autistic spectrum conditions
- Unit 6: Principles of supporting individuals with a learning disability to access healthcare
